Feeling burned out? Emotionally drained? Mentally exhausted? Procrastinating? Unable to finish tasks? Distancing yourself from people and friends? Feeling stuck? Me too. I am drained and at my lowest point right now. I have little motivation and I am extremely exhausted. I feel like I am running on ‘ E’ and without sounding dramatic, I am ready to drop out of school and just sleep forever.
Burnout is real and it is not just an individual problem. We can see examples of burnout in the classroom, at work, with friends, etc. But what even is burnout?
Well, burnout is a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion caused by excessive stress. Burnout can make one feel overwhelmed, exhausted (mentally, physically, emotionally), and unable to complete tasks.
Here are some tips on managing burnout that has been helpful for me!
Tips on managing burnout:
Recognize the signs
Take breaks and allow yourself to REST
Get off social media or disconnect from your phone
Prioritize
Seek support (friends, therapist, family, etc)
Talk to your teachers! Don’t be afraid to ask for extensions or talk with them about your struggles. Most teachers are supportive and understand that life happens and we are also in a pandemic
Figure out how to best manage your stress for YOU
Limit your contact with negative people
Set boundaries - don’t overextend yourself
Do something creative, tap into your inner child. Maybe paint or color
Go outside and get some fresh air
Drink water and maintain a good balance in your diet
Remember you got this! Your physical and mental health comes first. Take care of yourself, ask for help, and make a plan that works for you.
In light of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, we recommend checking the World Health Organization's website for the most accurate and up-to-date information. A global pandemic can cause stress, feelings of uncertainty, and so much more. Take care of yourselves and your mental health.
Stay safe and healthy.
